Entity Name Bearing Type

Name: Name Bearing Type
Code: Name_Bearing_Type
Label:
Number: Generate Table: Yes

Description

This entity is a virtual representation of the name-bearing type of a nominal taxon. For a nominal taxon in the species-group ( species or subspecies ) the name-bearing type is a specimen or series of specimens. For a nominal taxon in the genus or family groups ( above species up to and including superfamily ) the name-bearing type is another nominal taxon. The name-bearing type "provides the objective standard of reference whereby the application of the name of a taxon can be determined." (1)

Entity Nomenclatural Status

Name: Nomenclatural Status
Code: Nom_Status
Label:
Number: Generate Table: Yes

Description

This entity implements a look-up table for available Nominal Taxon Status values.

Annotation

Current values are:

primary - This status is used to indicate the establishment of a new Nominal Taxon lineage, the first assignment of a name to a name-bearing type in a particular lineage. This status does not require the specification of a superior Nominal Taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement.. IT IS UNCLEAR IS IF THERE CAN BE MORE THAN ONE NOMENCLATURAL TAXON LINEAGE WITH THE SAME NAME-BEARING TYPE. SEE ARTICLES 67(K) AND 72(D) OF THE CODE.

secondary - This status is used to indicate the movement, promotion, or demotion of a Nominal Taxon from its position as originally published, which results in a change in its name and/or taxonomic rank. The primary Nominal Taxon from which this one is derived is specified as the superior Nominal Taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement.. Authorship of the secondary nominal taxon is attributed to the author of the primary nominal taxon from which it is derived.

justifiable emendation - This status is used to indicate the justified correction of the name of a nominal taxon incorrectly spelled in its original published form. The Nominal Taxon having the original spelling is indicated as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement.. Authorship of the corrected form is still attributed to the author of the original form.

unjustifiable emendation - This status is used to indicate that a Nominal Taxon whose name is a proposed correction for another Nominal Taxon is not an acceptable replacement for the original name. The unjustifiable emendation becomes a junior synonym of the original Nominal Taxon. The Nominal Taxon with the original name is specified as the superior Nominal Taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement.

incorrect subsequent spelling - This status is used to indicate that the name of a Nominal Taxon is an incorrect spelling of another name. The Nominal Taxon having the correct name is given as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement. The incorrect name is a junior synonym of the correct name.

replacement name - This status is used to indicate that the name of a Nominal Taxon is proposed as the replacement for that of another deemed to be unavailable. The Nominal Taxon whose name is being replaced is given as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement.

child of - This status is used to indicate that the Nominal Taxon is placed under the Nominal Taxon indicated as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement. IT IS UNDECIDED WHETHER OR NOT THIS RELATIONSHIP WILL BE USED FOR ALL NOMINAL TAXA, OR ONLY FOR THOSE OF THE SPECIES-GROUP RANKS.

typified by - This status is used to indicate that the Nominal Taxon's name bearing type is the Nominal Taxon given as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement. This applies only to Nominal Taxa at the Genus-group and Family-group ranks.

junior primary homonym - This status is used to declare that the name of a Nominal Taxon is the junior primary homonym of the Nominal Taxon indicated as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement. A junior primary homonym is a name that has the same spelling as a previously published name but having a different name-bearing type. In the case of species-group names, the species-group name element must also be placed under the same Nominal genus. See article 57(h) of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature 3rd edition.

junior secondary homonym - This status is used to declare that the name of a Nominal Taxon is a secondary junior homonym of another Nominal Taxon specified as the superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement. IT MAY NOT BE USEFUL TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY HOMONYMS.

rejected - This status is used to declare that the name of a Nominal Taxon has been rejected by the International Commision on Zoological Nomenclature by application of it's plenary power. This status does not require the specification of a superior taxon in the Nominal Taxon Status Assignement.

Data Item authorship type

Description

This attribute indicates the type of situation under which the name of the Nominal Taxon was made available. There are three cases: publishing author, in-author, or ex-author.

In the publishing author case, the author team responsible for making the name available, by writing a description of the taxon to which it was applied, is the same as the team that authored the publication in which the description was given. This is the usual case.

In the in -author case, the author team responsible for making the name of a Nominal Taxon available is different from the author team that published the work in which the name is made available. If a Nominal Taxon has an in-author team, the publishing author team need not be cited, but when cited should follow the in-author team separated by the word "in."

In the ex-author case, the first use of the name of a Nominal Taxon is attributed by its publishing authors to an author team that did not publish the name in a manner sufficient to make it available. The ex-author team need not be cited; however, if cited, the ex-author team precedes the publishing author team, the two separated by the word "ex."

An in-author team differs from an ex-author team in that the in-author team is responsible for the name use and description of the taxon that makes the taxon available whereas an ex-author team is not

Annotation

If either in-author or ex-author is selected for this attribute, the relationship of Nominal Taxon to Team must contain a reference to the in or ex author team, otherwise that relationship is null.

Description

The name-bearing type of a nomenclatural taxon of higher than species-level rank. These types are in reality nomenclatural taxa themselves, but since multiple inheritence cannot be represented in an E-R diagram, this entity-type is not modeled here as a sub-type of NOMENCLATURAL TAXON. Instead a TYPE TAXON entity is a sub-type of NAME-BEARING TYPE and is associated with the NOMENCLATURAL TAXON that is the actual name-bearing type through a relationship.
